A working sketch
One answer, five primitives. The same model response, composed from a small kit of UI parts instead of a wall of text, and rendered at two densities. It is the demo for the essay The blank box is a systems problem.
Why it is canned. There is no model behind this page. The answers are fixed so the demo is instant, unbreakable, and honest about what it argues: the interface layer, not the model. The hard part, a model deciding which primitives an intent deserves, is the open problem the essay is about.
What to try. Flip the x-ray switch to see each response decompose into named system parts. Then flip Novice to Power and watch the same answers grow affordances instead of growing screens.
How it was built. Designed and built with Claude Code: I described each primitive and interaction in plain language, reviewed and art-directed the output, and kept the whole thing dependency-free. One HTML file, no framework, no build step.
